Drug Uses
Zoloft is used to treat depression, panic disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder (also called OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults. Zoloft is also used to treat OCD in children (aged 6–12) and adolescents (aged 12–17).
How Taken
Zoloft comes as a tablet to take orally. The general dosage is a tablet once a day. It may be taken with or without a meal. For best effect Zoloft should be taken regularly for a couple of weeks. Even you feel better do not stop taking Zoloft without your doctor`s approval. If you have been taking Zoloft in large doses or for a long time, your doctor will most likely want to gradually lower your dose before you stop taking Zoloft. Do not take more or less of this drug, than your doctor has prescribed to you.
Warnings/Precautions
You may not be able to take Zoloft or you may need dosage adjustment or monitoring while you are taking Zoloft if you have liver or kidney disease, suffer form seizures, or from mania or have suicidal thoughts. Before taking Zoloft tell your doctor if you have any of the above. Consult you doctor if you have any allergies, especially if you have had allergic reaction to Zoloft in the past. This drug is in the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the fetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women, or studies in women and animals are not available. Also it is not known whether Zoloft passes into breast milk. Therefore, do not take Zoloft without your doctor`s approval if you are pregnant, likely to become pregnant or breast feeding.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are- an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips/tongue/face, or hives), an irregular heartbeat or pulse, low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness), high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision), or chills or fever. If you experience any of these serious conditions, you should stop taking Zoloft and seek medical attention immediately. Some less serious side effects are- headache, tremor, nervousness, or anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, changes in appetite or weight, sleepiness or insomnia, decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm. Contact your doctor if you experience these or other side effects.
Storage
Store at room temperature 20–25°C (68–77°F), excursions permitted to 15–30°C (59–86°F). Keep away from children and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of a Zoloft overdose are- nausea, vomiting, tremor, seizures, agitation, drowsiness, hyperactivity, and enlarged pupils.
More Information
Be careful when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities. Be careful when taking alcohol during your treatment. It may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking Zoloft.
