Drug Uses
Proscar is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH, enlargement of the prostate gland). Proscar improves symptoms of BPH such as frequent and difficult urination and may reduce the chance of acute urinary retention (suddenly being unable to pass urine). It also may decrease the chance of needing prostate surgery.

How Taken
Proscar comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without a meal. Take Proscar at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Proscar exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Proscar, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Proscar or any other medications, if you have or have ever had a blockage of urine flow or liver disease. Tell your doctor what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take. Proscar is only for use by men. If taken by pregnant women, Proscar can cause abnormalities in the male fetus. Women who are or may be pregnant should not touch broken or crushed Proscar tablets.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time of the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Possible Side Effects
Some of the Possible Side Effects are impotence, decreased libido, and decreased volume of ejaculate. Some side effects can be serious. If you experience changes in the breasts such as lumps, pain, or nipple discharge, call your doctor immediately. Proscar may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

Storage
Store Proscar away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Keep out of reach of children.

Overdose
If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately.

More Information
Keep all appointments with your doctor. Before having any laboratory test, tell your doctor and the laboratory personnel that you are taking Proscar. Do not let anyone else take your medication. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.
